New Year’s Eve in Mindelo

When: December 31
Where: Avenida Marginal, Mindelo
What to Expect: For those who like to mix festivities, lively emotions and walks in nature, a trip to Boa Mindelo Apartments this festive season will be an excellent start for the whole of 2025. New Year’s Eve in Mindelo is a grand celebration that rivals Cape Verde’s major festivals. The São Vicente Municipal Council organizes a dazzling fireworks display that lights up the night sky for at least 15 minutes. The city comes alive with music, dancing, and joyful revelry. Avenida Marginal, the boulevard along the waterfront, is the epicenter of the festivities, where locals and tourists gather to welcome the new year. Traditions include jumping into the chilly ocean, a symbolic act that many participate in. The municipal band performs throughout the night, and the celebrations often continue until dawn.

Tip: Arrive early to secure a good spot along Avenida Marginal and soak in the festive atmosphere. The celebration is free of charge, so you can enjoy the festivities without spending a dime.

São Vicente Carnival

When: February/March (Shrove Tuesday: March 4, 2025)
Where: Mindelo
What to Expect: The São Vicente Carnival is a spectacular event filled with vibrant parades, colorful costumes, and exuberant street parties. Inspired by the carnivals of Brazil and enriched with Portuguese influences, Mindelo’s Carnival is a kaleidoscope of colors and rhythms.

  • The city’s streets are transformed throughout the weekend into a lively dance floor where local and international visitors join in the fun. The Carnival officially kicks off on the Friday night before, with the Mindel Fantasy parade. Sunday belongs to the Mandingas as in the weeks before, but this time there are more Mandinga parades from the different parts of the city.
  • On Monday evening before Carnaval, Samba Tropical infuses the streets of Mindel.
  • Shrove Tuesday is the climax of Carnival festivities, featuring the highly anticipated competition among the official Carnival groups. The parade on Tuesday night is the grand finale, running late into the night.
  • The Sunday after carnival is another day that’s all about The Mandingas of Ribeira Bote. The Sunday after Carnival features a final Mandinga parade known as the “funeral of Carnival,” offering a last hurrah for the season.

Festival Baía das Gatas
