Apart from Laginha Beach in Mindelo, most of the other beaches on São Vicente are a real treat for windsurfers (best conditions Nov-Apr). Baia das Gatas in the north of the island which can be reached by four-wheel drive is great for swimming because of the natural lagoon. São Pedro is arguably one of the world’s finest for speed windsurfing. In fact, in 1997 Sandy Beach at Calhau was included in the European professional circuit. 

Calhau is a picturesque fishing village located on the east coast of São Vicente island in Cape Verde, about 22 km from the city of Mindelo. This quaint village is part of the Ribeira de Calhau region and is known for its small beach, perfect for swimming, and a modest fishing port within a bay of the same name. On clear days, visitors can enjoy views of the uninhabited island of Santa Luzia from the village.

To the south, approximately 4 km from Calhau, lies the crater of the extinct Viana volcano. The area north of the village also features several other extinct volcanic cones, contributing to the dramatic landscape of the region.

Between Calhau and Baía das Gatas is Praia Grande, a stunning beach with white sand and crystal-clear waters. Praia Grande is known for its powerful Atlantic waves and is a preferred spot for nesting sea turtles. This beach, about 20 km from Boa Mindelo apartments, offers a long coastline where visitors can enjoy the raw beauty of nature. It remains relatively quiet even during peak seasons, allowing for a peaceful experience. The beach is free to access, but it is entirely natural with no facilities, making it an ideal destination for those seeking solitude and a close connection with nature.
